Why Indian Railways is rebuilding 1,300 stations at once

The number is hard to picture. More than 1,300 stations — roughly one in five of the stations Indian Railways operates — are being rebuilt at the same time.

What is actually being built?

Concourses above the tracks. Wider footbridges. Lifts and ramps as standard, not exceptions. The scheme's design brief asks each station to reflect local architecture, which is why the plans for Ayodhya and Chennai Egmore look nothing alike.

Where does the money come from?

The programme is budget-funded, with allocations made annually. Some larger stations follow a public-private model for commercial development above and around the concourse.
